Andy + Kristen | Incline Village Wedding {Sneak Peek}

I had the pleasure of second shooting a very elegant and classy wedding at the Cal-Neva in Crystal Bay on Friday with Emily Clark Photography.

Here's a quick sneak peek. I can't wait to share more!

Wedding photographer mistakes you don't want to make

His and Hers

Recently, I had the pleasure of attending a wedding as a guest. I love weddings, and this one was no exception. The decorations, flowers, and bridal party outfits were beautiful. The food was delicious and the toasts were heartfelt. However, I couldn't help but watch the photographers.

It was clear to me that these two photographers were beginners/amateurs. I repeatedly winced as their actions and movements called attention to their lack of experience. (Although, I was likely the only one to notice.) When I first started photographing weddings, I made many of the same mistakes. I still make various mistakes today as well, but some of the major ones have been put to rest. In hopes of helping other beginner or amateur photographers avoid making the same mistakes, here's a list of tips to keep in mind when photographing a wedding.

1) Do not, EVER, wear jeans to a wedding (or sweats... YIKES)
Wearing jeans says, "I don't care." As the photographer you aren't attending the wedding as a guest, you are there to do a job and to do it professionally. Your professionalism starts with your outfit. The bride and groom (B&G)may be friendly or even actual friends, but the rest of their guests don't know that, so act like a pro. Wear slacks or fancy capris. Avoid low cut tops and pants that reveal your booty when you bend over (I'd also avoid dresses and skirts.. think of what would happen if you tripped, then if you tripped in a dress). When in doubt, wear all black. And make sure you wear appropriate but comfortable shoes.

2) Don't chew gum
You weren't allowed to chew it in school, and it is just as disrespectful to be smacking away while the B&G are saying "I do." If your breath smells, brush your teeth ahead of time or bring mints.

3) Don't play with your cell phone
Don't even take it out of your pocket. Unless you are sitting on the toilet. Seriously.
Better yet, leave it in your bag or car. Get a watch if you want to check the time. If you have to keep your phone with you for emergencies, turn it on silent, then double and triple check it.

4) Don't dilly dally
Compose your image, take the picture, and move along. If you sit around recomposing the same shot over and over you might miss an important moment. During bridal or family portraits, take charge and get people where they need to be quickly. You can't wait and expect the B&G to do all the footwork to get everyone in the picture and lined up - that's your job. Be loud and command attention, but be professional while doing so. The quicker you get done, the happier people will be.

5) Know your equipment
This is the most important advice I can offer. If you don't know your equipment, you're going to have a hard time using it. So pre-wedding you should practice, Practice, PRACTICE!!

6) Fake it
Not up there with #5, but still good advice. Act like you know what you are doing, even if you're not 100% sure. Nothing inspires confidence like fumbling around and being completely unsure of yourself (ahem... sarcasm). Don't review an image on the back of your camera and then scowl. That's a dead give away that something is wrong. Its like your hairdresser stopping and saying, "oops." Its something the B&G and their guests don't want to and shouldn't have to see.
The same rule goes for your emotional attitude. People mimic those around them, and if you can convince them you are super happy and having fun, they will mimic you.. and you'll be able to capture those happy faces. Your feet may ache from hours of standing. You may be frustrated with the flower girl who won't stand still for two seconds. You may feel grubby and tired. But don't show it. If you're not good at hiding your real feelings, play some poker in a casino and you should learn to bluff pretty quick.

At the last wedding I photographed, I took the groom and his groomsmens off in the woods to take their individual and group portraits. They were complete goofballs and only gave me sporadic attention. To add to the situation, the lighting kept changing and I had to retake a number of portraits. But I went along with it, laughing and smiling and repeatedly saying "just one more picture." During the reception I had three different groomsmen come up and thank me for being relaxed and fun during their portraits.

7) Be prepared have a backup plan.
Pack your gear the night before, check it in the morning, leave early, and bring a second camera. You may not own two DSLR cameras (hopefully if you're shooting a wedding you at least own one). But what will you do if your primary camera fails? Even bringing a point&shoot is better than bringing nothing as a backup. The photographer makes the image, not the camera, and if needed you should be able to switch to a point&shoot and make it work. I second shot a wedding with a great photographer who discovered, as we we pulled up to the wedding location, that her primary camera wouldn't even turn on. The batteries hadn't properly charged the night before, but she had a second camera, and was able to charge her batteries while we shot the ceremony.

Know the schedule of wedding events and check in with other vendors or the wedding party for updates on the schedule. If things change, be flexible and go with the flow. You aren't the wedding coordinator, you are the photographer, so you capture what happens, regardless of whether it was planned to happen or not.

If you've never shot a wedding before, I would recommend second shooting for an experienced photographer before taking one on by yourself. You'll get experience and be able to watch how a seasoned professional works. I'm always looking for second shooters, so if you're interested, send me an email.

Any tips I missed? Or mistakes you've learned from that you want to share? Share them in the comments below.

Apple vs PC

Which side are you on? Are you pro-Apple or pro-PC/open source/etc??

Back when I was in college the debate was always about which computer system was better, and generally Apple won by popular opinion in the art/photography groups.  I had still have a slow Compaq computer that did a horrible job processing photographs compared to the MAC computer in the library.  I usually spent every free moment on campus in the library on those macs. But when I got home I was stuck with my dinosaur.  I vowed when I finally got a new computer I'd get a MAC.

In June 2009, I got my first smartphone.  Until then is been using an old phone on which I could  only make phone calls and listen to voicemail... I couldn't even text!!!  Enter iPhone 3Gs and key world flipping upside down.  Pictures, emails, texting, social media, EVERYTHING was at my fingertips at anytime of day. For the last 2 years its been great (except for the ATT network it was attached to, but that's a different story for another time).  Up until the last 2 weeks I've been pro-Apple.

Apple has a great reputation and the stuff to back it up.  BUT they aren't the only option.  You'll spend twice as much for an Apple computer than if you build it.  My dad is an engineer and has built all our family's pcs as far back as I can remember.  I put off buying a new computer for years because I couldn't commit  to spending the extra money for the Apple name, but I couldn't give up really really wanting an Apple.  In the end I chose to have my pc custom built.  I saved over $1000 that I'm going to use for a new lens.  My new computer is racing fast and is exactly what I wanted.  It may not be a MAC, but its the quality of the photographic work I create and provide to customers that matters, not what system I edited them on.

Last week we found out ATT decided to let us out of our contract early and free of charge (we've had THAT many issues... But again its another story for another time).  Our friend Akiya works at Verizon and so Jeff (hubby) figured out everything to get new phones and s new contract setup asap.  I'm usually the one to take months to make a decision, and suddenly I was faced with choosing between the Apple iPhone4 or the HTC Thunderbolt.  I stressed like crazy trying to decide. I knew and loved my 3Gs but heard the iPhone 4 on Verizon had bad signal, and couldn't do some other important things (Anyone have a Verizon iPhone who can comment?). The tbolt had a bigger screen, would run on 4 LTE (which is supposed to be fast.. whenever that comes to our area) and had perks of running on open source software.  I went back and forth and even woke up in the middle of the night thinking about it.

I went with the tbolt with the assurance I could exchange it during the trial period. It's taken me a couple days to figure it out, but its a pretty neat phone.  Smart phones are so similar that its mainly just a matter of relearning locations and such.  I miss the ease of screenshots and Instagram, but those aren't dealbreakers.  I'm no less of a photographer or artist because I don't have an iPhone.  Technology is great, but I really believe its what a person expresses about themselves that holds value, not the technology they use to do so.

But what do you think? Are you pro-Apple, pro- pc, or neutral?  What products do you own and what do you think about them?

April Showers ...in the guest bathroom

Today is April 22nd.

How in the world is it already April 22nd? I feel like each year of my life, the days, months, and even seasons pass more quickly than the previous year. And I know I'm not the only one. Time doesn't actually speed up.. but since we can't accurately compare last year to this year, we are stuck always feeling like time is flying by!

And so, despite my good intentions to blog more.. its been nearly a month since my last post. (Can that really be true??) And I've been swamped. At work I'm busting my bottom like a good hard worker. At home I'm doing my best to keep up with laundry (my husband likes to leave his dirty clothes in two separate corners rather than the laundry basket), dishes (there are somehow more dishes to wash than we use for each meal), and vaccuming (jeff is determined to shave our golden retriever this summer, I'm determined to stop him). On top of the normal routine, our master bathroom has been under construction for the last 4-5 weeks. And then taxes *shudder*, but more about those later.

A number of years ago when we first moved into our house we realized that mold/mildew would grow along the edges of the tub faster than I could clean it. I tried to keep up but didn't think to much of it. Then one day Gracie (the golden retriever) ran around the side of our house to get a ball or something and we went to find her and realized the wall under the master bath window was completely warped and bubbled out. We called our landlords, and they patched up some broken grout. Fast forward to present and the warping had continued, but also moved into the floor around the tub. So we called our landlords again, and this time they sent a contractor.

For the last number of weeks the contractor stripped our bathroom: the tub, walls, floor, put in a new sink/vanity, tub, and tile. But its taken weeks. A few hours here, a few hours there... and injury or two and a few days later.. etc. So for the last month Jeff and I have been living out of our guest bathroom (which mind you is just as small as our master bathroom). But we only brought the absolute shower necessities into the guest bath, and everything else went into the garage. But now whenever we need something we have to go all the way out to the garage to get it.

A week ago the bathroom was finally ready to paint.  I choose a yellow color and offered to do the painting (Because I love to and haven't painted in years, except for painting exhibit walls white). So part of the day Friday and all day Monday I painted the bathroom.

Only a few places need a third coat and then we can finally return to using the master bathroom! And hopefully at least part of our life will return to normal. ;]

Abraham + Winston | Newborn Portrait Session {2nd Sneak Peek}

I couldn't help but share a few more of these adorable boys! Joleen and I met up again on Monday to try a couple more poses. Abraham was the perfect little baby and let us move his limbs and little head into all sorts of cute positions. Isn't he adorable?!

** Note: Please do not try this at home. It is a two part photograph. A baby's head is too heavy to be held up by their little arms. **

And here's one more of baby Winston. He really didn't want to stay asleep!
